So its been a very long time since we wrote our blog so thought better stop being so lazy and get typing, also cos starting to forget what day we did what. Think our last blog we were just about to travel down to Ushuaia….. When we got there it was absolutely freezing, probably something to do with it being near Antarctica! It was a bit show offy about being the southern most city in the world, kept telling you everywhere. Lots of people came there to catch a boat sailing to Antarctica, which was very expensive, 3 grand just for 10 days. You have gotta bloody love penguins to pay that! Anyway we got to go out on a little boat just around Ushuaia and saw some sea lions and oh my god they absolutely stink it is so disgusting! The next day we went to the National park to do a hike up to the top and we were warned it was a strenuous hike but I couldn’t believe how hard it was it nearly killed me. I realised how bloody unfit I really was! Si was not impressed with the amount of moaning he heard that day! Well it put us of hiking for a while! Though we did make it to the top so we could say we were at the top and the end of the world! Also while we were in Ushuaia we went to see the Perito Moreno glacier, which is one of only 3 glaciers which is still growing in the world. It was pretty impressive but the amount of photos me and Si took was a bit ridiculous, you will be pleased to hear we deleted a load of them so as not to bore you all to death!
The best bit about Ushuaia was this old Argentina lady who was in our dorm who was most upset about being put in a top bunk and kept making comments. One morning there was this massive thud and we all woke up to see her lying on the floor blatantly just fallen out her bunk but instead of admitting it she just pretended she was just getting up and meant to do it like that! I was pissing myself! That evening a chair arrived by her bunk for her to get up and down…………even tho the bunks weren’t that high and there was a ladder!!
After Ushuaia we caught a bus to El Calafate, which took forever. In El Calafate we decided to go super trekking having just about recovered from our one-day walk and swearing not to hike again! Super trekking included hiking up a big mountain on the first day, staying the night in a campsite half way up and then the next day we walking to and then on a glacier. It was so so cold when we were walking and pouring down with rain so pretty miserable but when we got to walk on the glacier it was worth it. It was really strange just walking on this never ending piece of ice with holes everywhere where you could just fall to your death! Though we got to wear crampons over our shoes which had big spikes on them so you stuck into the ice and didn’t fall off the glacier! Also to get to the glacier you had to go across this river by rappelling where you hang from a wire above the river upside down and pull yourself along, it sounds horrible but its quite fun really!
Once back from our 2 day trek we took it easy cos we were sore all over and just wanted to be lazy! We celebrated valentines day and spent the night at the local casino playing black jack till 4am,aren’t we romantic! But we did go for a nice meal first in our defence! At one point we were feeling pretty worried as was losing but kept playing and in the end didn’t lose much and had a good night.
After El Calafate we got on another bus up to Punto Arenas. We just had a day here and spent the day going on a boat to visit a penguin island. The island was literally covered in penguins. We were surprised at how small they were but they were funny to watch and they made the same noises as donkeys when they spoke to each other……which did your head in after a while!
From here we headed up to Santiago, Chile which is where we started out 2 month tour but going to write bout that next time.
hope you are all well, miss everyone loads, love from sally and si xxxxxx
